Rahu — the north node, the hunger of the chart
Rahu is not a planet but a point — the ascending node, where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path heading north. It is real geometry: eclipses can only happen near the nodes, which is exactly why the old story has Rahu swallowing the luminaries. Jyotish calls it a chhaya graha, a shadow planet, and reads it as the chart's hunger: the direction of unfinished appetite, the thing you want with an intensity you cannot fully explain. Rahu breaks rules, crosses borders, and modernizes whatever house it occupies. It moves backward through the zodiac, always — desire, it suggests, works against the grain.
As karaka — significator — Rahu stands for ambition and obsession, foreign lands and foreign ways, innovation, sudden rises, and appetites that outrun their container. Its Vimshottari mahadasha runs 18 years: a whole season of life colored by this graha's agenda.

In practice it takes the character of its sign lord and the planets it sits with. Rahu does not appear in the classical natural-friendship table; later texts commonly treat it as Saturn-like in temperament and judge it chiefly by its sign lord and conjunctions.
Well-channeled Rahu is the pioneer's asset: the nerve to enter fields with no map, comfort among foreigners and new technology, ambition strong enough to lift a whole family's trajectory in one generation. Every self-made outsider story has Rahu's fingerprints on it.
Hunger unexamined eats its owner: obsession, shortcuts, smoke mistaken for fire, the prize that turns to ash on touching. Rahu's classic pattern is wanting the next thing before tasting this one. The practice is not renunciation but digestion — finish wanting one thing properly.
Technology and innovation, foreign trade and diaspora careers, aviation, media and fame-adjacent work, research at unconventional frontiers. Rahu excels wherever being an outsider is an advantage and precedent is worth less than appetite.
Rahu in matters of the heart is fascination — it falls for the exotic, the unavailable, the not-yet-had. Its lesson is that a person is not a horizon: intimacy begins where the chase was supposed to end.
BPHS grants the nodes shadow-planet status and Vimshottari lordships, but the classics never settle Rahu's own sign, exaltation, or debilitation — later texts variously say Taurus or Gemini for exaltation, and we flag that dispute rather than pick a side. Its mahadasha runs eighteen years.
